Before developing my picture book Between Homes, I created this ceramic sculpture to explore feelings of separation and emotional baggage. Around that time, my father suffered a stroke, and I learned about his long struggle with hoarding. I spent weeks cleaning up and putting everything into dozens of trash bags. Each one felt like I was packing up my past as well. We stood outside his door and watched as the trash lady sorted through them, feeling a quiet sense of closure for all that we had been through.
